Against the merciless backdrop of sugar cane fields, the lives of Tété and Valmorain grow ever more intertwined. When the bloody revolution of Toussaint Louverture arrives at the gates of Saint Lazare, they flee the island that will become Haiti for the decadence and opportunity of New Orleans. There, Tété finally forges a new life - but her connection to Valmorain is deeper than anyone knows and not so easily severed.

ISABEL ALLENDE, nepoata fostului președinte chilian Salvador Allende, s-a născut pe 2 august 1942 la Lima, în Peru. Își petrece copilăria în Chile, iar în timpul dictaturii lui Pinochet se refugiază în Venezuela, unde rămâne timp de 15 ani și lucrează ca ziaristă. În prezent locuiește în California. În 1982, primul ei roman, Casa spiritelor, are un succes fulminant și devine imediat bestseller internațional. În 1994, statul francez i-a conferit titlul de Chevalière de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, iar în 2014 i s-a decernat Presidential Medal of Freedom.
